Brief History
Started in the 1980's, Wallowa Valley Youth Arts Festival is a annual event bringing in over 200 pieces of art work from the area's young people, kindergarten through 12th grade. A panel of local artists and community members judge artwork in six different categories from six different age groups. Categories include: Painting; Drawing; Mixed Media/2-D Collage; Sculpture/Woodworking; Photography/Printmaking; and Fiber Art/Ceramics/Jewelry.
Children are allowed to enter one piece in each category and ribbons are awarded for first, second and third places. All art work receives a participant ribbon. Patrons of the festival also get to vote for the People's Choice Award.
"It was hard to know where to look first, walking into the opening reception of the Wallowa Valley Youth Arts show Friday night at the Joseph Community Center...the walls and displays racks were alive with color and movement. There were horses and fish, soccer players and sunflowers, county roads and knights in armor. There were architectural drawings and cartoon characters, Indian masks and Grecian urns...." —Elane Dickenson, Wallowa County Chieftain, May 5, 2005.
